Healing

Many people are wounded today. More people are wounded emotionally than physically. Medical science has advanced tremendously with many more new treatments and cures for the physical illness, but it is unable to discover cures for emotional wounds of the soul.

Every emotional wound could potentially develop into physical illness that are fatal. Such emotional wounds put us at increased risks of many health problems such as anxiety disorders, depressions, high blood pressure and other heart related problems.

Statistics on the prevalence of mental illness (extracted from https://www.nami.org/learn-more/mental-health-by-the-numbers) by National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is alarming:

  1. Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (46.6 million) experiences mental illness in a given year.

  2. Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S. (11.2 million) experiences a serious mental illness in a given year that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.

  3. Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13%.

Mental illness does not happen overnight, it all starts with a wounded soul. Today I am writing this article to share my thoughts on how you can help yourself and the healing process for a wounded soul. They are just some thoughts I have, which I hope if this can bring some cheers and helps to those who read it. If any of you benefit from this, it would have achieved the objective of this article.

I would be addressing more on the healing for wounded soul rather than the physical conditions.

God Is the Master Healer

I want to emphasize this on top of all other advises. God is the Master Healer and all no one can do a better healing job than God. There is a limit in what doctors can do, and most drugs prescribed tends to have side effects. While a particular drug is good at targeting a certain illness, it usually has some side effects. God’s healing is perfect and have no side effects. Divine health is better than divine healing. But if you need healing for your soul, God is the first help that you should approach.

The bible tells us that Christ was wounded that we may be healed:

and Christ Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed 1 Peter 2:24

But you may ask, I have prayed to God, I have faith, I have done all that I could but I am not seeing much improvements. Friends, let me encourage you on this. God is not slow in answering your prayers. The supply from God is always flowing, but perhaps the pipe on the provision of God have been choked.

Let me cite a portion of truth that I learned from a new book written by Pastor Joseph Prince entitled “Live the Let-Go Life“. Pastor Prince shared about his vision on many golden pipes from heaven, pouring out golden oil on believers. Every pipe is giving constant supply for different areas of believer’s life. But when the believer is getting worried over a particular area of his life and squeezing the end of the golden pipes, the supply was constricted at his end even though the supply from God is still flowing. All that the believer has to do is to let go, and the supply will flow again.

God is always supplying by His grace. Our part is to let go and let His supply flow. Sometimes the golden pipe of provision is not constricted by one reason only, it can be due to other reasons which I will explain more in the subsequent sections. If you want to find out more about breaking free from stress, worry and anxiety, I encourage you to get a copy of this book “Live the Let-Go Life” by Pastor Joseph Prince.

You Must Have a Desire to be Healed

You may be wondering, is there anyone out there who is sick and do not want to be healed? Of course, there are! Some people choose not to be healed. One of the reasons is that they enjoy the attention and cares of other people even though they are suffering internally. Some prefer to be in that emotional state to take revenge on the person who hurt them, thinking that their sorrow state will inflict condemnation and guilt on those who hurt them. And there are those who are too weak to even want to attempt to seek for helps to be healed.

Whatever the reasons may be, all these are the causes for constricting the supply from God to administer healing to your souls. God has given human a free choice. He would not overwrite that free choice that He has given to us. Hence even if He wants to lift you out of your pit but you refuse it, He will respect your choice.

The result is that you will continue to be in your sorrow state even though God is always ready to help you and the golden pipe of supply is always flowing with His provision. If you are too weak even to get started, let me encourage you with this word:

By all means keep moving

Never Blame Anyone in Your Life

You may be hurt by others, even by the very people whom you loved dearly. Playing the blaming game will not get you out of the pit, neither is it going to heal your wounded soul.

Remember this, no one is perfect in this world, neither are we. Treat this world as a training ground regardless of your age. The good people give you happiness. There are bad people who will give you an experience, or a chance to learn a lesson so that when you get out of it, you become a stronger person than you used to be, and you can be a blessing to others going thru the same bad experience you once had.

Life is like a piano. White keys are happy moments and the black ones are sad moments. In actual tunes played by the piano seldom would any musician play only the white or black keys only. Both keys are played together all the times to give us the sweet music called life.

Life is never a bed of roses; it comprises the happy and sad moments. Enjoy the happy moment, but never allow any sad moments to wound your soul. If you focus on the hurt, you will continue to suffer. But if you focus on the lesson, you will continue to grow.

Do Good Anyway

Every bad situation will have something positive. Even a dead clock shows the correct time twice a day. There is always something good even in a bad situation. The key is this, are you able to spot the good in the midst of heats and challenging situations? Do you always see a glass as half filled or half empty?

This is a survival skill that you can learn and it will be a life saver. For example, try to spot or notice at least one thing good per day, and I am sure you will be able to find one or more. It will take some practice and once that become a part of your nature, it will not be difficult to see that this world is still beautiful despite the presence of many other imperfections.

Just because there are many unkind things in the world today, all the more we need to perform acts of kindness, because every kindness matter. One day you will look back and realize that you worried too much about things that don’t really matter in life.

I love this word from the late Mother Teresa:

  • People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway

  • If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

  • If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

  • If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

  • The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.

  • Do good. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

  • For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.

  • It was never between you and them anyway.

Gratitude

Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because regret is strong than gratitude. Don’t live a life of regret. Start now to show gratitude and you will find life is more pleasant and you would be more resilient against any stimulus to wound your soul. A grateful person is hard to be defeated, because even in challenging times, he is able to see goods in bad times.

Think about how good God is to you. Think about His Grace. Grace is when God gives us good things that we don’t deserve. Mercy is when He spares us from bad things we deserve. Blessing is when He is generous with both. If you consider all these, we can never run out of reasons to thank Him. Just remember this always, God is good all the time. And all the time, God is Good.

The moment you have this revelation, I believe and declare that your soul has started the healing process. A soul that is so filled with gratitude towards God can never remain in the same wounded state. When you give thanks to God, you are saying to God, I give you the full permission to take control of my life and heal me. I am confident that the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Control What You Fill Your Mind

There is a battle of two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, lies, inferiority and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy and truth. Which wolf wins? The one you feed.

What the illustration above is telling us is, you are what you think. Often our minds and hearts are disturbed by many distractions and cares of this world. They caused us to lose our joy due to our ignorance. We give too much attention to many things in life that does not matters. We also lose our focus on things that really counts. Whatever that is good, whatever that is of good virtue, let your mind dwells on such things on a daily basis. All these have healing power to your soul if it is wounded.

The bible teaches us that “A merry heart does good, like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones. (Proverbs 17:22). Once you recognize the importance of keeping your heart in perfect peace, you would want to guard it with all due diligence.

Merry Heart

If your soul is already wounded, stop dwelling on the hurts. Forgive the person who have hurt you. It’s silly to keep nursing and rehearsing the resentment in your mind. If someone has hurt you once, don’t let him hurt you over and over again by holding on to the grudge. It’s like allowing the enemies to strike and injure you on the same spot repeatedly.

Fill your mind with forgiveness. You are doing yourself a favor by forgiving because you are setting yourself free and healing your wounded soul. Read good books that lift your spirit or listen to podcast on sermons that teaches the grace of God.

Last but not least, make sure you have the right belief. Right believing will lead you out of your misery and help you in your recovery. There is another great book by Pastor Joseph Prince entitled “The Power of Right Believing“. What you believe is everything! Believing the right things is the key to a victorious life. Get ready to be inspired and transformed and learn how to win the battle for your mind by developing habits for right believing.

The Time for Healing is Now

You are believing a lie if you subscribe to the belief that happiness is in the next place, the next job, or with the next partner. Until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are. In the same way, you must get out of the mindset that healing your wounded soul would only happen when you achieve certain goals. Healing starts at now and it happens at where you are now. There is no better time to get started, if there is one, it is now.

Get out of the house, smell the flowers on the road side and look at the birds in the sky. They neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! God is gracious to you and it is God’s will that you are blessed and live an abundant life. As you embark on the journey to recovery, never give up until you win or when you achieve full healing of your soul.

Conclusion

There is a limit of what you can do to get well with your own human efforts. Do not forget the fundamental source of healing, God is the first thing you need and be in a restful spirit to receive the full healing. Being at rest does not mean that you do nothing at all. Rest can be doing a God directed activities, but everything that you do, you do with faith and in a restful spirit believing that it is God who is in control and that it is God who works it out for you.

Remember also the illustration of the golden pipe of supply from God. The supply is always flowing, but don’t allow anything such as cares and worries in your life to constrict the supply.

I wish you well and may the grace and blessing of God be in your life always.
