God is a humorous God. Just when I thought that I am not wealthy enough, He opened my eyes to see that there are many needy people around me. For example, look at the elderly cleaner in the office who still have to work to put food on the table for the family. Am I not more fortunate than them already?
Sometimes when I grumble about the job I am having and the many complaints on the way the company is managed, suddenly I was contacted by a few ex-colleagues who are looking for jobs. I was humbled and count it a blessing that I still have a job and all the problems I used to complain are so minute compared to being jobless.

The list of wants vs what I have already been blessed can go on. As I begin to take stock of what I have, no matter how small it may be, I am pleasantly surprised that I am more blessed than I know about it.
How many of you are like me? We complaint about how unfortunate we are without realizing that we are more blessed than billions of people in the world. I am not advocating that you always think about people less fortunate than you to make yourself feel good. I am writing to open your eyes to uncover and count the blessings you already have!
If you search high and low and still could not find something to be counted as a blessing in your life, I have a few suggestions to help you to be grateful for.
First Blessing to Count
If you are reading this post now, you are blessed to be alive. Feel your pulse, breathe in and breathe out. That’s right, this is the first blessing you have, which is, you are alive! No matter how bad your situation is, or how bad a life you think your life is, be grateful that you still have a life.
Getting to live is a blessing by itself. Don’t under estimate this simple and yet important truth. Tomorrow is uncertain, no one can 100% sure that they will wake up the next morning. So, treasure every moment you get to breathe. Start loving others and yourself.
I would say this is the first and most important blessing anyone could have.
Second Blessing to Count
We may not have everything that we want to own. But we can be thankful for what we already have and enjoying them. Remember this, contentment is great gain. There are many people out there in the world who wish that they have just a fraction of what you have today.
Some people always wait for a better tomorrow. But when tomorrow comes, instead of enjoying it, they again think about a better tomorrow. Don’t wait for the moment you have all that you want then become happy. There is no better time than today to start enjoying what you have now.
Life will always be complicated and our human desire is like a deep well that can never be filled. It’s wiser to learn to be contented and live in the current moment. Once you allow this truth to sink into your heart, you will be living in a realm where everything you have is a blessing and you will be grateful for that.
Third Blessing to Count
If you are healthy, or at least you are not bed ridden, count it as a blessing too. For most of you with a good pair of hands and legs, you could see, smell and eat, be grateful for that. Out there in the world, there are people who do not have hands to hold the folk and spoon. Some are on wheel chair or clutches and have mobility challenges. Another person life could be living in total darkness because of blindness.
Health does not always come from medicine. Most often it comes from God, peace of mind, peace of heart and peace in the soul. Therefore guard your heart with due diligence from stress and cares of the world.
Fourth Blessing to Count
If you have friends who are genuinely good to you, even if you have only one such friend, you are blessed. We are living in a fallen world where most people whom we call as friends are not necessarily happy when you prosper. Some people are good to you only because you have something that benefits them, and they may not think twice to desert you once you are of no values to them.
If someone comes into your life and has a positive impact to you, be thankful that your paths crossed. Be grateful that God sent them into your life to make you happy.
The opposite is what you need to be aware. Stay far away from people who are toxic. Such people exist only to rob you of your blessings. Read up my other post on “Secret to Happiness in Life“. There is a section “People in Your Life” that I further explain on toxic people that you need to be aware of.
Fifth Blessing to Count
You are very blessed if you have a family and you get to love and to share your life with them. We are now living in a world where everything is uncertain and unpredictable. Home and family have therefore become your safe harbor when everything outside can be chaotic. It’s a place where you can be yourself, nobody is going to judge you even when you failed. It’s a place where you get satisfaction and joy.
Enjoy the company of your loves one and strive to live a life that you can feel secured and satisfied. A satisfied life is better than a successful life. Because our success is measured by others, but our satisfaction is measured by our own soul, mind and heart.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your family is safe, you have food to eat and clothing to wear. Therefore, be grateful for all that you have now. When good things happen to you, do not think that it is due to good luck. Nothing happens because of luck or chance. It is all due to God’s grace and favor in your life.
Never think about the past, it may bring you tears. Don’t always think about the future, it brings fear and uncertainty due to the world we are living in. Live this moment with a smile, it will bring cheers.
Never regret any days of your life. There were good days that gave you happiness and good memories. There were those bad moments that you wish it never happened, but they gave you experience and lessons learnt. Not a single day is without significance. Even a damaged clock will tell the time correctly twice a day.
Learn to see good things in even in bad times. It’s never too late to count your blessings and be happy. It’s all up to you and no one else. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
I hope you are blessed as you read this.
May God bless you.
